This Thursday, March 8th 2007 is International Women’s Day. The Women’s Resource Centre is, as I understand it, holding a rally at City Hall at 1230pm. They are asking that people make an attempt to wear purple clothing or something purple (a ribbon for example), as purple is the official colour of International Women’s Day.
The website http://www.internationalwomensday.com/ can provide individuals with further information on the global activities of the day, and some of the history behind International Women’s Day. I understand that the UN has called for the global theme to be one of “Ending Impunity for Violence Against Women and Girls.” Please see this site for more details on this as well: http://www.un.org/events/women/iwd/2007/index.html.
On a side note I would like to know if anyone is interested in working with me to petition for March 8th to become a national/public holiday. Also, I thought people may be interested in an initiative some of us workers at my job are trying to get off the ground. At least one lunch hour a month we are hoping to set aside to devote to reviewing the issues affecting women in Bermuda, everything from systemic sexism and sexual violence to the existing legislation and seeing what we can do about it (can we make reccomendations for legislation changes, what practical steps can we take as a whole, etc.). I don’t see any reason why this can’t be successful, or why other workers can’t get together for the same purpose. Anyone interested in building up a network of workers along these lines, or has any reccomendations, please contact me as well.
My email is firstname.lastname@example.org.
